Elf Letters 2016: Night One

For the last several years, Elves - with very interesting names - from the North Pole have come to visit our home beginning at midnight on the first day of December. They leave little trinkets for each of our daughters, but more importantly they leave a letter for them to read each morning. The great thing about the letters, that I've come to realize and appreciate, is that they each serve a purpose. They are not just quickly written notes on Post-its, but instead are filled with the importance of family, the real meaning of Christmas and a reminder of how special and beautiful (and fortunate) they each are. I look forward to their visits as much as the girls do.

December 1, 2016

Madison Paige, Bailey Grace & Sophia Faith,

Hello, again, BEAUTIFUL girls!  Oh, By Golly it’s CHRISTMAS!  Did this year go quickly or what?! Goodness Gracious! OH, MY!  It went about as fast as Santa when we smothered the chimney with Vaseline. Well, well! Let me tell you something. If you ever thought Santa couldn’t get angry you thought wrong. His tooshy was so sore, he couldn’t sit down for a WEEK!. After five plates of cookies and a HUGE cup of hot COCOA, he was at least smiling again.

I have to say girls that your trees look AMAZING! I love how the smaller one sits right in front of your great-grandfather’s clock that he built for his father one Christmas. And your other tree! Wow! If anybody says artificial trees don’t look real or can’t look as CHRISTMASSY, then they are dead wrong. Dead as a flee on RUDOLPH’S back. Not that he ever had fleas. I hope you don’t think we ELVES don’t take care of our REINDEER up here in the North Pole. Anyway, your tree is more beautiful than any real tree I’ve ever seen. It’s not about what the branches are made of, but rather the time spent as family decorating it. You girls worked really hard and your place looks like a place of GRACE!

Did you know that decorating Christmas trees began back in the 16th Century by Christians in Germany? Pretty cool, huh?!

I believe you have some different things hanging on your walls this year. I love the cross above the couch. Such a great reminder of an unending and unwavering love and grace that Christ has for us and SHOWS us each and every day. From the stable in a dirty cave to the hill of CALVARY, there are many lessons that HE taught us while here on EARTH. Love and Kindness, something I know your MOMMY and DADDY try to teach you, are two of the biggest.

We ELVES couldn’t be more proud of you girls. Your school-work is sensational and you’re more and more beautiful and LOVELY every day.  We know for a fact that your parents thank the good LORD all around for their precious daughters. You girls are so very lucky. They are not perfect. No parent is, but they have a perfect love for you that will never go away.

We left you just a little treat. I hope you remember this is a season of giving for we are blessed when we give. They’ll be a lot of getting I’m sure, but promise me you’ll remember and think about those less fortunate than you. So let’s work on the complaining and the YUCKYNESS. Okay?! We can hear it all the way up here and it blocks out all the CAROLING that’s going on this time of year.

We love you girls! Please show love to one another. Say kind words to each other and hug each other good night. I think that’s a great tradition to begin. What do you say?!

We’re off, but we’re so glad to be back in your HOME.

Happy December and Merry Christmas,

Slinky, Stinky and Stew
