Elf Letters 2016: Night Two

For the last several years, Elves - with very interesting names - from the North Pole have come to visit our home beginning at midnight on the first day of December. They leave little trinkets for each of our daughters, but more importantly they leave a letter for them to read each morning. The great thing about the letters, that I've come to realize and appreciate, is that they each serve a purpose. They are not just quickly written notes on Post-its, but instead are filled with the importance of family, the real meaning of Christmas and a reminder of how special and beautiful (and fortunate) they each are. I look forward to their visits as much as the girls do.

December 2, 2016

Good morning, ANGELS! We were thinking of you last night. Outside with the snow falling and the scent of chocolate cookies wafting through  the air, we were desperately hoping that it would be our turn to go to the GRAYBILL house. We heard so many wonderful things. All the other ELVES that have been able to come visit talk about how obvious it is that LOVE is like the sixth member – or seventh since your KITTY is a member too – of your home.

I know it may not seem like it because people get upset and frustrated, but that’s normal. The BLESSINGS that have been bestowed upon you are many and ONE of those blessings is that your mommy and daddy are so much in love with you girls. And how could they not BE? You’re bright, beautiful angels. You know WHAT else? You. Are. IMPORTANT. Don’t ever, ever forget that. You are important to each other, your family, your church…EVERYTHING that you do and say and are is IMPORTANT.

The elves from last NIGHT, brought back some pictures of the three of you. Do you see the SPARKLE in your eyes like I see them? It’s almost like you can SEE bits of HEAVEN through your eyes. You girls were created SPECIAL for sure.

We noticed while in your home, that your daddy keeps a JOURNAL and writes something in it EVERYDAY. We noticed that one year ago today that you SKYPED with your Paw-Paw. He loved you girls and loved talking to each one of you. He was very proud of his great-granddaughters.

There’s just something extra special about this time of YEAR. I really hope you girls can begin not just showing love and kindness, but speaking it to each other as well. CHRISTMAS time is a time for a lot of memories that one day you’ll look back on and I want more than anything for you GIRLS to look back on this time together and remember the love you felt for each other. You want to know a little secret? You three know that your DADDY doesn’t always speak with love and kindness. But you want to know something? He gets really, really UPSET with himself when he doesn’t put love in his voice. I hear him praying sometimes out loud about how much he wants to be a better father to you. I just thought I’d let you know that. PARENT’S aren’t perfect and they know their KIDS aren’t perfect either. It’s important to FOCUS on all of the good, wonderful things that are all around you. It’s also important to COUNT all of those good and wonderful things.

Speaking of good and wonderful…isn’t it amazing to think that the little baby Jesus – whom we celebrate this time of year – grew up to heal the blind and walk on water? There’s a wonderful song about that called, Mary Did You Know? It really makes you appreciate the miraculous things HE did. It makes me think of Mary a long time ago holding her baby BOY under the star of BETHLEHEM.

Well, we need to roll out of here and get back to the POLE! Lots to do as you can IMAGINE. Keep working hard girls! You make us ALL proud. We’re leaving a little gift again. Perhaps you can use them to keep a journal of things that go on each day…or to COUNT your blessings.

MERRY Christmas!
Your Elves,

Bolt, Minty and Yadda Dadda Zimmy Plop a Pooey
