Slice of Life: Day 10: Animal Facts

Here are some fun animal facts you can share with your kids, or scatter into your writing. They are from globalanimal.org. I added my own researched facts as well. (I needed something lighthearted after yesterday.) Just FYI, by researching, reading then typing out the facts, it helps you remember. You'll be ready for trivia night! And who doesn't love a random fact around a campfire?


1) An ostrich has such strong legs, it can kill a lion (and a human).

    *Their eyelashes are 5 cm across.

2) Seahorses mate for life...and are never unfaithful.

    *In some countries they are considered symbols of good luck and vitality.

3) Elephants weigh less than a blue whale's tongue.

    *The Asian elephant's scientific name is Elephas Maximus

4) Clownfish are born male, but some change sex.

    *Have a protective layer of mucus which protects them from stings.

5) Honeybees have hairs on their eyes.

    *They sustain our ecosystem

6) A desert locust swarm can be 460 square miles in size.

    *Can fly 15 hours without stopping.

7) Pandas need to eat 28 pounds of bamboo a day.

    *Firefox is one of its many nicknames.

8) Polar bears are left-pawed.

    * Their skin is black.

9) Baby giraffes can stand within half an hour of birth.

    *One of their favorite things to eat are mangoes.

10) Bats always turn left when exiting a cave.

    *Can eat up to 1,200 mosquitos in an hour. (I think I want a pet bat.)

11) Sea otters hold hands with each other when sleeping.

    *A group of otters is called a raft.

12) Rats laugh when tickled. 

    *You don't want them in your house.

13) No two tigers have the same stripes. Neither do zebras.

    *Can weigh up to 660 pounds. (I wonder if they're lap cats.)

14) When anacondas mate, several competting males will form a ball in a ritual lasting up to a month.

    *I hate snakes. Hate 'em. A lot.

15) Dolphins only sleep with half their brain at a time, and with one eye closed.

    *Have 2 stomachs

16) Butterflies taste with their feet.

    *There are 20,000 species.

17) Alligators are old. 150 million years.

    *Their bites hurt.

18) Gentoo penguins use a pebble to propose.

    *They poop every twenty mintues. (That would make being a teacher hard. And forget road trips.)

19) Jaguar is a Native American word meaning "he who kills with one leap".

    *Their spots have spots.

20) The "Jesus Christ lizard" can run on water.

    *lifespan is about 7 years.

21) Cows can experience separation anxiety.

    *Can almost see 360 degrees.

22) Galapagos tortoises sleep 16 hours a day and can go a year without eating.

* A group is called a creep.

23) Anteaters eat 35,000 ants a day.

    *No teeth.

24) A cat's noseprint is as unique as a human's fingerprint.

     *There are over 500 million pet cats. (That's not enough.)

25) Once a giant clam picks a spot on a reef, it does not move.

    *Can live over 100 years.
